New york dialects

PrintE-mail

When one thinks of New York dialects, one probably thinks of the quintessential Brooklyn accent where "bird" is pronounced "boyd," etc. However, because New York is such a melting pot of cultures, there are quite a few different New York dialects, from the traditional Brooklyn accent, to the Polish accent, to the Russian accent, to even the Chinese accent. Because of this, most professional actors do not claim to be skilled in "New York dialects" but instead claim to know specific New York dialects, such as the Brooklyn New York dialect or the Russian New York dialect. Because New York is often the setting for many films and plays, most acting schools offer a dialect class that focuses on the various New York dialects. If you check out your local acting college, you should be able to find some courses that are dedicated to teaching you the most common New York dialects. Many actors claim that learning dialects, including New York dialects, in an acting class is one of the most efficient ways to learn because you learn from your peers. Getting and receiving feedback from your peers is often one of the easiest ways to learn. You can also pick up on some New York dialects by moving to New York. Spend some time in the various regions of New York City and you will pick up on a lot of the various New York dialects just by listening. Nevertheless, you will not be able to pick up all the different nuances of the New York dialects without some kind of formal instruction. However, many actors and teachers suggest taking both formal instruction and immersing yourself in the everyday use of the dialect simultaneously is one of the best ways to learn a dialect or accent quickly and easily. Remember that learning New York dialects, or any other dialect or accent for that matter, takes a lot of time and commitment. If you do not have the time necessary to dedicate to learning one of the New York dialects, do not waste your money on a class. Just going to to a class a couple times a week will not help you to truly master any of the New York dialects. Instead, you will have to try speaking in the dialect in everyday experiences. You will have to make it second nature to you in order for you to have truly mastered it. So, make sure you are willing to commit to the experience before you waste your energy and time signing up for a speech class.
