It may surprise you to learn how many different American English dialects exist. However, American is a large continent that is made up of three different countries, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In the United States, where English is the official language, there are quite a few American English dialects because there are some vast differences in the various regions in the country. For instance, a person from California will pronounce certain words very differently than a person from Georgia will. A speech therapist will help you learn exactly how your mouth and tongue should move when pronouncing various words for the different dialects. Moreover, a speech therapist will be able to give you different exercises that will help you to stretch your tongue and even your vocal cords so that you can match even the most subtle nuances in each of the dialects. Another good way for you to pick up at least some of these American English dialects is to actually move to the different regions where you can find these dialects. However, this technique for learning the American English dialects will require you to have the kind of lifestyle that will allow you to just pick and move like that. However, if you can manage it, this is one of the best ways to learn a new accent or dialect. This is because you will be hearing the American English dialects everywhere, from your morning radio program to your regular waitress, to even your neighbor. You will be surprised how quickly you will pick up on the dialect when you are immersed in it like this. No matter how you choose to learn some of the American English dialects, make sure that you are completely comfortable speaking in them before you add them to your skills section on your acting resume. There is nothing worse than not being able to deliver a specific accent that you said you could to a new director.
